: Updated references to macOS, iPadOS, iOS, ACDSee. Nikon Z9 lossless compressed raw files are supported by both Apple's Core Image RAW and Serif's own raw library. Unfortunately it has been proven that macOS Ventura and iOS / iPadOS 16 Apple Core Image RAW does NOT support Nikon Z9 High Efficiency raw files. Apple's website claims macOS Ventura and iOS / iPadOS 16 Apple Core Image Raw support the Nikon Z9. : Affinity Photo 2 lets you choose between Serif and Apple Core Image RAW. Software that relies on a library provided by the operating system will have to wait for the OS to provide it (eg Apple Image Core RAW for macOS and iOS/iPadOS).

Open Source software that relies on open source raw file decoding libraries may never support the High Efficiency raw file format because of its patent and licensing.

Others waited until they could support the format on both Intel and ARM platforms. Some software makers released updates to their Intel-based versions to add support for high efficiency format.

Most raw photo and video editors support Windows and macOS on Intel and ARM processors including laptops, mac Studio, and iPhones and iPads. It took intoPIX almost a year to release an ARM-based SDK (Sept 2022). The SDK (software development kit) required to process high efficiency files was initially available only on Intel-based platforms. You can learn more about this new file format here: Software makers must license it and use their SDK. The new High Efficiency raw file format included in the Nikon Z9 is built on “TicoRAW” (stands for TIny COdec) patented by intoPIX. You may wonder why it is taking (took) so long for many raw photo and video editing tools to support for the new High Efficiency raw formats. Most software makers were quick to offer support for Nikon's own lossless compressed file format. Both high efficiency formats use lossy compression and may not provide the same level of image quality as Nikon's own lossless compressed format. Intuitively the smaller, more compressed HE format may suffer more image degradation than the larger, less compressed HE* format. The "HE" format delivers a full resolution raw file at about 22 MB per file. The "HE*" format delivers a full resolution raw file at about 33 MB per file. The Nikon Z9 offers two levels of high-efficiency (“HE”) output. The Nikon Z9 offers a new High Efficiency TicoRAW lossy compressed format that delivers significantly smaller raw files with minimal loss of image quality. Nikon's own lossless compressed raw file delivers a full resolution image at an average file size of 55 to 60 MB.
